Explorations in Painting

Welcome to my new blog. In this first post I’ll try to explain the purpose of this blog. Now, I’m a painter not a writer so these posts may not be the best written for a while until I get used to this, but the posts will be mostly pictures anyway. Its been a while since I let myself do any painting but now I’m going to try to get back into it, and this blog will catalog my process. I always enjoyed landscapes and I’m going to start by trying to learn my favorite subject, seascapes. In the past my work has been highly reference based. Even when not following references directly I would use a lot of photo references and sort of college bits and pieces together. I’m going to try to learn to paint without any references, so its going to be a learning process and hopefully the work will improve over time.

Each post is going to show the process of a painting I’m working on, so I’ll be taking lots of work in progress shots and putting them into the posts. I’ll try to explore different techniques, and different ways of approaching the paintings. In the beginning it might be more trail and error. None of this is intended to show off how good I am, but to show the struggle, the back and forth of it all. I hope that in the future these posts can serve as a learning tool, even if only by cataloging my mistakes and what not to do. I’m going to try to update this blog at least once a week, and hopefully Improve the look of the blog at some point too. I’m already working on a painting and will be writing a post on the progress so far soon.

…also I need to make the title of the blog better, it sucks.
